Gethsemane

Gethsemane is not a place of public ministry. It is not a place of teaching crowds or performing miracles. It is the place where obedience is tested in silence.

This song reflects the moment when it looks like Jesus stands alone (although the Father is with Him), fully aware of what lies ahead, and yet chooses submission rather than escape.

Scripture does not soften that moment.

“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.”
Matthew 26:38

The sorrow of Gethsemane is not weakness. It is honesty. Jesus does not deny the cost — He names it.

The prayer that follows is one of the most revealing in all of Scripture.

“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.”
Matthew 26:39

This is not rebellion. It is relationship. The Son speaks openly to the Father about the weight He carries.

Yet the prayer does not end there.

“Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Matthew 26:39

This is the turning point of history — the moment where surrender outweighs survival.

Gethsemane reminds us that obedience does not require emotional calm. It requires trust.

Even comfort from others fails in this moment.

“Could you not keep watch with me for one hour?”
Matthew 26:40

Isolation does not mean abandonment. The Father is present even when helpers fall asleep.

Jesus knows what is coming: betrayal, violence, false judgment.

“The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.”
Matthew 26:45

Yet knowing this does not cause Him to retreat. It clarifies His purpose.

“Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
John 18:11

The cup is not taken away — but the will is perfectly aligned.

When betrayal arrives, it comes quietly.

“Judas came to Jesus and said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ and kissed him.”
Matthew 26:49

What looks like defeat is in fact the beginning of victory.

Gethsemane teaches us that submission to God’s will is never wasted — even when it leads through suffering.

Jesus rises, not because the path is easy, but because the Father’s will is good.

And through that obedience, salvation is secured.

Amen.
